Pilgrim is a delightful—and frequently chilling—mix of tales old and new. Vanderdecken's Message Home (Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, 1821). This is a very famous urban legend that I have heard many times. Illustration copyright 2006 by Viví Escrivá. Basically it meant that I had some very enthusiastic kids who sang and participated and I had some who didn’t. When all mattresses are gone, the child with the most mattresses on the bed is the “true princess” or prince.

I think about the story of Little Red Riding Hood and how originally it was about the predator-prey relationship, and then it becomes a story about innocence and seduction for us. As most of us had chicken pox as kids we will relate all too well to this book, I am not so sure our kids will have the same personal connection. The old man lent a willing ear to their tale of love, for in his inmost heart he felt sorry for these faithful suitors and would have liked to see his lovely foster-daughter married to one of them.

Cinderella, with her fairy godmother, is an example of a fairy tale; although fairy tales do not necessarily have to have fairies. (An interesting note: often the original versions of the fairy tales we know now were meant for adults. Hansel and Gretel gathered brushwood together, as high as a little hill. Elephant could not find the culprit, for all the hares were alike. Adults are allowed to collect and study anything, even old theatre programmes or paper bags.

Very thoughtful of the author, especially given the vivid descriptions of fireworks that are bound to fire up any child's imagination! I’ve worked with world myths, legends, folk tales + fairy tales for 30 years and have written numerous books in the genre for adults and children. For those unfamiliar with the comic, Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales reinvents the mythology of the old classic tales with a modern updated horror twist. For instance, if you had children you could ask them to pull a card from the deck each night and read them that particular story, using it as a basis to discuss the image and the child’s feelings about the story. (This technique, I have found, works just as well for “grown-ups”!) My first thought upon looking through the deck was that it would be especially good for children and families, and I also wondered if the deck was perhaps a little too “girly”, since it shows more female figures than men.

When it was mid-day, they saw a beautiful snow-white bird sitting on a bough, which sang so delightfully that they stood still and listened to it. This they did, and when they arrived they found Hare with whitewash in a huge can, ready to act. A good deal of fantasy films are told in the fairy tale style, starting with "Once upon a time..." and ending with "...they lived happily ever after." Does not distinguish between male and female development.

The mind that thought of light, heavy, grey, yellow, still, swift, also conceived of magic that would make heavy things light and able to fly, turn grey lead into yellow gold, and the still rock into a swift water. Offers an analysis of fourteen French fairy tales, from the medieval Romance of Mélusine to Jean Cocteau's film version of Beauty and the Beast, exploring their universal and eternal nature as well as their relevance to modern readers. We use that story again and again to work out these very tough issues that we have to face.

Lawrence Yep’s Auntie Tiger (HarperCollins, 2008) is a Chinese Red Riding Hood tale in which Big Sister and Little Sister – who quarrel all the time – are left alone at home with an admonition from their mother not to open the door while she’s gone.

She burns all the dishes and fails miserably at keeping house. Not unlike the famous hat worn by Robert Burns' legendary 'Tam O'Shanter'. On the other hand, fairy tales weave a world of magic and leave much room for imagination and fantasy. When he is in human form, he looks like a common peasant, except that his eyes glow and his shoes are on backwards. A beautiful queen wishes for a daughter “as white as snow,” and soon gives birth to one. Some tales can be heard aloud using Real Audio.

Nine Children at One Time (Germany, Ludwig Bechstein). The genre accounts for $1.1 Trillion in box office over the last 3 years, and now has two top rated shows on TV. Selected musical works based on the Faust Legend. I quite like Little One-Eye, Little Two-Eyes, and Little Three-Eyes, and the Three Oranges. Fairy tales generally have evil characters as well, like Snow White's wicked stepmother or Cinderella's stepsisters.
